IS OSTEOPATHY APPROPRIATE FOR NEWBORNS?
Absolutely! Most osteopaths agree that childbirth, whether too long or too short, is possibly the first traumatic event a baby experiences as it can disrupt the function and development of the cranial structures.
Delivery can cause future functional disturbances or may affect the mobility of cranial bone junctions (even minimal ones) in infants, when instruments such as suction cups, spatulas or forceps, are occasionally used.
At Forcephysio, as a preventive measure, our certified osteopaths recommend an osteopathic examination of the newborn, a few weeks after birth, in order to restore balance and remove existing tensions. An evaluation is all the more necessary in cases such as:
- Use of forceps, suction cups or spatulas;
- Umbilical cord wrapped around the baby’s neck;
- Epidural delivery;
- Caesarean section;
- Very long delivery (more than eight hours) or very short one (less than two hours);
- Premature birth (the skull is more fragile in this case);
- Expulsion with strong pressure on the mother’s abdomen;
- Strong traction on the head;
- Twin pregnancy (two placentas);
- Baby reanimation (even a slight one);
- Foetal distress;
Furthermore, osteopathy can make a huge difference to the baby when in these challenging situations:
- Baby always turns on the same side;
- Bronchitis;
- Baby fall (after supervision and medical examination);
- Excessive infant crying with or without obvious reasons;
- Breastfeeding or bottle feeding problems;
- Swallowing or breathing difficulties;
- Poor position of the feet and hips;
- Earaches;
- Belly aches, colic, or occasional stools;
- Baby does not sleep well;
- Frequent regurgitations;
- Repeated rhinitis;
- Flat head or asymmetry;
- And many other problems…
Please note that even without any clear functional disturbances, an osteopathic consultation is advisable to guarantee the newborn’s comfort and serenity, and allow him to adapt to his new environment.
