WHAT IS HAND AND WRIST THERAPY?
Hands and wrists are complex joint structures made up of many different bones, tendons, muscles, nerves, veins, ligaments and connective tissues that enable a patient to perform movements, have dexterity and strength required for work and daily tasks. We often take the ability of our hands for granted, unless they are limited by pain or injury.
Because of their constant and continuous use, hand and wrists are frequently injured. Any direct trauma and laceration of the hand can result in serious consequences if one or more tissues are damaged. An injury will, therefore, affect the ability to perform even the simplest tasks. Fort that reason, ensuring appropriate diagnosis, assessment and rehabilitation for injuries to hands and wrists is essential to preventing long-term adverse effects and possible disability.
Hand therapy is a type of rehabilitation performed by an occupational therapist whose goal is to reduce or restore all functional disabilities. Due to our specific expertise in assessments and treatments, our highly trained and qualified team of therapists in this area provide therapeutic treatments to restore function, limit the progression of a condition and prevent upper extremities dysfunction so that patients can better perform their daily tasks at home, at work as well as resume their recreational activities.
Sprains and strains, as well as fractures and tendinopathy, are the most common types of injuries affecting the hand and wrist. Sprains and fractures are very frequent because of our natural tendency to use our hands to protect ourselves when we fall, slip or loose our balance. Overuse and repetitive movements have been linked to a variety of wrist injuries, the most common being carpal tunnel syndrome.
A proper hand and wrist assessment is needed before choosing a treatment option. At Forcephysio, our occupational therapists assess deformities, swelling, color differences, sensory symptoms, and changes in overall functions (movement, strength, dexterity, etc.), which are very important in determining the scope, limitations and severity of an injury.
