OSTEOPATHY FOR A PREGNANT WOMAN? ABSOLUTELY!
Osteopathic treatments during pregnancy are totally indicated and harmless. Osteopathy is a gentle and a safe manual approach for the baby and helps relieve discomforts in the body of the future mother. The tissue adjustments made in an osteopathy session are certainly appreciated not only in the different trimesters of pregnancy but also in preparation for childbirth as well as in the postpartum period (after delivery). The therapist is as concerned with the “container” (the mother’s bone and musculoskeletal structures) as with the “contents” (the baby and the organs of the uterine environment), and especially with the harmony between these two sides.
Once the assessment is done, the osteopath uses gentle techniques to release tensions and improve the whole body’s mobility, more specifically in the lumbar and pelvic region. Some techniques are also performed so that the body adapts better to the postural and physiological changes underway. Your osteopath works “with” the baby: the soft and subtle abdominal tissue manipulations allow the therapist to get in touch with the foetus presence that could occur occasionally during a session. Without tissue tensions, the body is free of stress and that could allow a better positioning of the baby. At all times, an experienced practitioner in osteopathy remains attentive to tissues and their limits.
ONLY BENEFITS FROM OSTEOPATHY DURING MY PREGNANCY
It is not uncommon for the pregnant woman’s body to need some help to keep its balance. Osteopaths know how to identify the causes of these imbalances. Here are some examples of frequently used techniques on pregnant women in an osteopathy session:
- A soft abdominal palpation to help find ligament strains which could be the cause of back pain or pelvic pain;
- Gentle manipulation of the pelvis bones and joints in order to promote a correct positioning of the baby throughout pregnancy and delivery;
- Stretching and gentle exercises to help the pregnant woman regain and maintain a fluid breathing during pregnancy and childbirth.
OSTEOPATHY TECHNIQUES ALLOW RELIEF OF:
- Lumbar discomfort or pain (lower back, sciatic pain) and neck (neck and shoulder);
- Ligament pain in the pelvic joints;
- Perineal tensions;
- Headaches;
- Circulatory problems;
- Digestive problems.
AFTER DELIVERY
Osteopathy is also of great help to the mother after childbirth, whether performed with or without medical interventions, such as episiotomy, epidural anaesthesia, caesarean section, etc. Under these conditions, and even during a “natural” and “easy” birth, the pregnant woman tissues have undergone a certain level of constraints that should preferably be corrected without too much delay in order to avoid future problems. Osteopathic sessions can also provide good support for the mother in postpartum depression. The osteopath chooses then to work on the craniosacral axis to help the nervous system find its balance, which is interdependent of the psycho-emotional state.
A visit to the osteopath does not substitute a medical consultation but it can effectively alleviate several common health problems during pregnancy.
